Depression Causes Pain

Burdine & Brown Nov. 6, 2019

Depression is a condition many people develop. Once source of depression is chronic pain. Chronic pain can come from failed medical treatment. Failed medical treatment can originate with bad doctoring or doctoring that is limited by insurance company adjusters dictating what type of treatment will and will not be authorized in your workers' compensation injury claim.

I know of no insurance adjuster who will automatically authorize a legitimate referral from the authorized doctor for treatment of depression. Adjusters have been trained to JUST SAY NO to any psychological treatment.

According to WEB MD, “depression is not a sign of weakness or a negative personality. It is a major public health problem and a treatable medical condition.”

Some of the folks I represent in their injury cases develop depression due to losing all hope. This can originate with the reality that after a serious job injury the person cannot possibly return to their work which might have been a source of great satisfaction.

Depression can make chronic pain worse. Treatment of depression can help to lift a person out of chronic pain. Yet, in my practice of law, I must fight very hard to get my clients treatment for depression.

Having undergone prior treatment for depression before an injury, at any time in your life, will make it extremely difficult (although not impossible) to demonstrate that the job injury with its chronic pain brought on the depression.
